On This Day

  • Asarah B’Tevet
  • 557: Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire, was significantly damaged by a 6.4 magnitude earthquake
  • 1287: During the St. Lucia’s Flood in Northwest Netherlands, the Zuiderzee seawall collapsed causing the loss of over 50,000 lives
  • 1914: Argentina’s Democratic Progressist Party (Partido Demócrata Progresista, PDP) was founded
  • 1927: Iraq officially gained independence from Britain, but British troops remained
  • 1988: A general strike took place in Spain to protest austerity measures
  • 1990: In a landmark US “Right to Die” case Nancy Cruzan’s family was allowed to have her feeding tube removed leading to her death 12 days later
  • 1999: Flash floods in Venezuela’s Vargas State resulted in the deaths of thousands of people and caused a total collapse of the state’s infrastructure
  • 2017: The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted to end net neutrality
