- International Sex Workers Day
- 1863: Harriet Tubman led Union guerrillas into Maryland to free slaves
- 1913: Demonstrations were held in support of general voting right in Netherlands
- 1924: US President Calvin Coolidge signed the Indian Citizenship Act which declared all Native Americans to be American citizens
- 1965: The second of 2 cyclones in less than a month hit India and killed 35,000 people
- 1967: Race riots occurred in Roxbury, Massachusetts
- 1979: Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley signed city’s first homosexual rights bill
- 1989: 10,000 Chinese soldiers were blocked by 100,000 citizens in Tiananmen Square, Beijing. The citizens were protecting students demonstrating for democracy
- 2015: The US Congress passed new legislation to reform National Security Agency procedures and restricting the gathering of phone records
- 2020: An outbreak of Ebola killed five people in Mbandaka, Democratic Republic of Congo
