- 1177: Emperor Frederik I and Pope Alexander III signed the Peace Treaty of Venice
- 1291: The Everlasting League, the basis of the modern Swiss Confederation, was formed
- 1812: A tornado hit Westchester County, NY
- 1834: The Slavery Abolition Act 1833 came into effect and abolished slavery throughout the British Empire
- 1838: The Apprenticeship System was abolished in most of the British Empire and former slaves were no longer indentured to their former “owners”
- 1840: Labourer slaves in most of the British Empire were emancipated
- 1920: The Peace of Riga brought about independence for Latvia
- 1933: Nazis instituted the death penalty for anti-fascists in Germany
- 1942: German occupiers demanded a listing of all Dutch telephone subscribers
- 1942: Race riots occurred in Harlem, New York City
- 1943: Japan declared Burma an independent nation
- 1943: Race riots again occurred in Harlem, New York City
- 1953: California introduced a Sales Tax which was dedicated to funding education
- 1960: Benin gained independence from France
- 1972: The first article exposing the Watergate scandal, written by Bernstein and Woodward, was printed in “The Washington Post”
- 1976: Flash flooding in Big Thompson Canyon, Colorado killed 139 people
- 2012: Typhoon Saola killed 82 people and displaced over 150,000 people in the Philippines, Taiwan, and China
