  • National Non-Profit Day
  • 1577: The Peace of Bergerac was signed, granting political rights for Huguenots
  • 1787: Jews were granted permission in Budapest, Hungary to pray in groups
  • 1795: A slave revolt occurred at Knip plantation, Curacao
  • 1915: A hurricane struck Galveston, Texas killing 275
  • 1924: A French-German trade agreement was signed
  • 1926: The Greek-Serbian, Croatian, and Slavs peace treaty was signed
  • 1945: Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta declared Indonesia (Dutch East Indies) independent from the Netherlands
  • 1950: Indonesia formally gained independence from the Netherlands
  • 1955: Hurricane Diane caused the Connecticut River to flood, killing 190 people and doing $1.8 billion damage
  • 1956: West Germany’s Federal Constitutional Court banned the Communist Party of Germany (KPD)
  • 1956: In one of the largest demonstrations in South Africa’s history, 20,000 women marched to present petitions against carrying of passes by women to the Prime Minister
  • 1959: A 7.1 earthquake struck Yellowstone National Park
  • 1960: Gabon gained independence from France
  • 1969: Hurricane Camille struck the US coastline and killed 259 people, mostly in Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana
  • 1976: An earthquake and tsunami in the Philippines killed about 8,000 people
  • 1983: Hurricane Alicia killed 17 people in Texas
  • 1999: A 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck İzmit, Turkey, killing more than 17,000 people and injuring 44,000 more people
  • 2012: The Russian Government banned Gay pride events in Moscow for a century
  • 2016: Flooding in Louisiana left 13 people dead and damaged 4,000 homes
  • 2019: Huge wildfires began on Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands prompting the evacuation of 9,000 people
