Many days there are far too many anniversaries, holidays, and observances to post about individually on social media, so in an effort to have more of them available, LLPHP is going to experiment with posting them daily. On This Day

  • International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development
  • Repeal of Prohibition Day
  • 1349: 500 Jews of Nuremberg were massacred during Black Death riots
  • 1456: An earthquake struck Naples killing about 35,000 people
  • 1496: Jews were expelled from Portugal by order of King Manuel I
  • 1933: Prohibition ended in the US when the 21st Amendment to the US Constitution was ratified
  • 1952: The worst smog in London ever set in. Over the next three days it would cause between 4-8,000 people’s deaths
  • 1955: The historic bus boycott begins in Montgomery Alabama by Rosa Parks
  • 1957: New York City became the first US city to legislate against racial or religious discrimination in the housing market
  • 1957: President Sukarno of Indonesia expelled all Dutch people
  • 1967: Pediatrician Benjamin Spock and poet Allen Ginsberg were arrested in New York while protesting against the Vietnam War
  • 2005: The Lake Tanganyika earthquake caused significant damage, mostly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
  • 2005: The Civil Partnership Act went into effect in the United Kingdom, and the first civil partnership was registered there
  • 2012: 8 people were killed and 12 injured by a magnitude 5.6 earthquake in South Korea
  • 2016: Malta became the first country in Europe to outlaw conversion therapy
  • 2017: Austrian courts ruled in favor of same-sex marriage
  • 2019: The World Health Organization (WHO) said 142,000 people died of the measles in 2018, up nearly 20,000 from 2017
  • 2019: During a national strike in France more than 800,000 people in 100 cities protested against proposed pension reforms
