- 1769: A lightning strike on the Bastion of San Nazaro in Brescia, Italy, ignited 90 tonnes of gunpowder, killing 3,000 people
- 1795: Curacao governor De Veer sent militia to stop rebellious slaves
- 1858: Netherlands and Japan signed a trade agreement
- 1891: A hurricane hit Martinique causing the deaths of about 700 people
- 1917: A “Great Fire” in Thessaloniki, Greece destroyed 32% of the city and left 70,000 people homeless
- 1920: Tennessee approved the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution, ratifying the amendment and allowing women’s suffrage
- 1955: Hurricane Diane made landfall in the US and over the next few days killed about 400 people
- 1977: South African anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko was arrested. He died a month later from injuries from a beating by police
- 1982: Japanese election law was amended to allow for proportional representation
- 1983: Hurricane Alicia battered Houston and Galveston, Texas
- 1991: Hurricane Bob hit North Carolina with 115 MPH winds
- 1994: A 5.6 earthquake in Algeria killed 171 people
- 2019: 1.7 million people, a quarter of the population, took part in peaceful, pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong
