- 1825: Bolivia gained independence from Peru
- 1942: Dutch Jews began three days of rioting
- 1944: The deportation of 70,000 Jews from Lodz Poland to Auschwitz began
- 1945: The US dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan killing 90,000–166,000 people over the next few months
- 1951: Typhoon prompted flooding killed 4,800 people in Manchuria
- 1962: Jamaica became independent after 300 years of British rule
- 1965: US President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act prohibiting voting discrimination against minorities
- 2012: Mount Tongariro, New Zealand, erupted for the first time in a century
- 2019: The Philippines declared a national dengue epidemic with 622 people killed and 146,000 people infected so far in 2019
