On This Day

  • National Rationalization Day
  • World Understanding and Peace Day
  • 1869: Louisiana’s Governor signed a public accommodations law
  • 1887: The French and Italian Riviera’s were struck by an earthquake causing the deaths of 2,000 people
  • 1898: In France, Emile Zola was imprisoned for writing his “J’accuse” letter accusing the government of anti-Semitism and wrongly jailing Alfred Dreyfus
  • 1919: The Fascist Party was formed in Italy by Benito Mussolini
  • 1923: Great Britain lowered the import duty on German products from 26% to 5%
  • 1944: The Soviet Union conducted a forced deportation of the Chechen and Ingush people from the Caucasus region to Central Asia. Hundreds of thousands of people died during the forced relocation that many consider an act of genocide or ethnic cleansing
  • 1970: Guyana became a republic
  • 1992: The Socialist Labour Party was founded in the former Soviet nation of Georgia
  • 1998: Tornadoes in Florida killed at least 31 people
  • 1998: Osama bin Laden published a fatwa declaring jihad against all Jews and “Crusaders”
  • 1999: An avalanche destroyed the Austrian village of Galtür, killing 31 people
  • 2014: A pro-Euromaidan rally was held in Simferopol, Ukraine, while in Kerch, protesters attempted to replace the Ukrainian flag from city hall with a Russian flag
  • 2019: Clashes on the Venezuelan border killed two as its country’s officials tried to stop aid getting in
  • 2020: African American Ahmaud Arbery was shot to death after being chased down by three white men in Brunswick, Georgia. After video of the shooting came out the men were arrested, charged, and later convicted.
  • 2020: China’s Supreme Leader Xi Jinping described the country’s COVID-19 outbreak as the China’s largest health emergency since 1949
  • 2020: President Moon Jae-in put South Korea on high alert, empowering the government to lock down cities after 602 cases of COVID-19 and six deaths were reported
  • 2020: The first major COVID-19 outbreak in Europe occurred in Italy with 152 cases and three deaths, prompting emergency measures including locking down 10 towns in Lombardy
  • 2020: Violent protests against new discriminatory citizenship laws in Delhi, India erupted leaving at least 38 people dead over the next few days
