Many days there are far too many anniversaries, holidays, and observances to post about individually on social media, so in an effort to have more of them available, LLPHP is going to experiment with posting them daily here. On This Day

  • International Day of Women and Girls in Science
  • National Inventor’s Day
  • 1720: Sweden and Prussia signed the Second Treaty of Stockholm
  • 1766: The Stamp Act was declared unconstitutional in Virginia
  • 1768: A letter written by Samuel Adams circulated around the American colonies opposing Townshend Act taxes
  • 1790: The Society of Friends petitioned Congress for the abolition of slavery
  • 1811: US President James Madison prohibited trade with Britain for the third time in four years
  • 1812: Massachusetts Governor Elbridge Gerry signed the redistricting bill that gave rise to the term “gerrymander”
  • 1814: Norway’s independence was proclaimed
  • 1902: Police beat universal suffrage demonstrators in Brussels
  • 1903: The US Congress adopted the Expedition Act, which authorized the Attorney General to ‘expedite’ anti-trust cases through the courts, reflecting growing popular support for President Theodore Roosevelt’s “trust busting” campaign
  • 1916: Emma Goldman was arrested for lecturing on birth control
  • 1943: Transport #47 departed for Nazi Germany with French Jews aboard
  • 1953: The USSR broke off diplomatic relations with Israel
  • 1964: Taiwan broke off diplomatic relations with France
  • 1971: The US, UK, USSR, and others signed the Seabed Treaty outlawing nuclear weapons based on the ocean floor
  • 1974: Libya nationalized three US oil companies that had not agreed to 51 percent nationalization
  • 1978: China lifted a ban on the works of Aristotle, William Shakespeare, and Charles Dickens
  • 1990: Nelson Mandela was released after 27 years of imprisonment in South Africa
  • 2007: A national referendum in Portugal legalized non-therapeutic abortions when requested by the woman during the first 10 weeks of pregnancy
  • 2011: Arab Spring Protests in Egypt culminated in the resignation of Hosni Mubarak and the transfer of power to the Supreme Military Council after 18 days of protests
  • 2016: The last of the Oregon militia members occupying the Malheur Wildlife Refuge surrendered to authorities after 41 days
  • 2020: Snow fell in Baghdad, Iraq,for only the second time in a century
