On This Day

  • 1551: The Dutch West coast was hit by a hurricane
  • 1910: Baltimore became the first US city to pass an ordinance requiring white and black residential areas
  • 1962: Nyasaland seceded from Rhodesia and Nyasaland
  • 1980: Anguilla became a British dependency separate from St Kitts
  • 1998: The US House of Representatives voted to impeach President Bill Clinton
  • 2007: The Lakotah people, a Native American tribe, proclaimed independence and withdrew from all their treaties with the United States, stating they were establishing the Republic of Lakotah as a separate country
  • 2019: The Australian State of New South Wales announced a 7-day state of emergency amid extreme heat and over 100 bushfires that had burned for two months
