  • 1526: The first slave revolt in the American colonies occurred in South Carolina
  • 1692: Edward Bishop was jailed for proposing flogging as a cure for witchcraft in Salem, Massachusetts
  • 1745: Austria and Bavaria signed the Treaty of Füssen, ending Bavaria’s participation, on the French side, in the War of the Austrian Succession
  • 1871: All German Jews were emancipated after the German Constitution was adopted by the last state, Bavaria
  • 1915: Germany’s use of Chlorine Gas, was the first military use of poison gas in World War I
  • 1945: The Concentration Camp at Sachsenhausen was liberated
  • 1946: The Sozialistic Einheitspartei Deutschlands (SED) Party (the East German Communist Party) formed
  • 1970: The first Earth Day was celebrated
  • 1981: 10,000 copper workers in Chile began a strike seeking better pay
  • 1991: An earthquake struck Costa Rica and Panama, killing 95 people
  • 1992: A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck under the Little San Bernadino Mountains, near Joshua Tree, California
  • 1992: Gas explodes in a sewer in Guadalajara, Mexico killing 200 people
  • 1997: During the Algerian Civil War, 93 villagers were slaughtered in the Haouch Khemisti massacre
  • 2000: In a pre-dawn raid, federal agents seized six-year-old Elián González from his relatives’ home in Miami, Florida as part of a controversial international custody battle
  • 2006: 243 people were injured during a pro-democracy protest in Nepal after security forces opened fire on protesters
  • 2020: Sudan banned female genital mutation and made it a criminal offense
  • 2021: India set a world record for daily COVID-19 cases recording 314,835 new cases with 2,104 deaths
