On This Day
- 1914: Jews were expelled from Mitchenick, Poland
- 1920: In the First Peace of Riga the Soviet Union recognized the independence of Latvia
- 1929: Persia and Iraq signed a friendship treaty
- 1942: The Nazi SS began exterminating 3,500 Jews in Zelov Lodz Poland through the end of September
- 1942: 999 Jews were taken from Mechelen Transit Camp in Belgium
- 1951: Flooding from the Mississippi River flooded 100,000 acres in Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, and Illinois
- 1960: Chad declared independence from France
- 1964: Paterson, NJ experienced a race riot
- 1965: 6 days of rioting began in the Watts section of Los Angeles
- 1991: 400,000 people demonstrated for democracy in Madagascar, and 31 people were killed
- 1999: A rare tornado tore through downtown Salt Lake City, Utah killing one person
- 2003: A heat wave in Paris resulted in temperatures up to 112°F (44° C), leaving about 144 people dead
- 2012: 153 people were killed and 1300 people were injured in Tabriz and Ahar, Iran after two earthquakes
- 2013: 22 people were killed by flash floods in Kabul, Pakistan
