  • 1190: The York Pogrom, the slaughter of the Jews of York, England because they would not be baptized as Christians, was completed
  • 1886: 20 African Americans were killed in the Carrollton Massacre in Mississippi
  • 1894: US and China signed a treaty preventing Chinese laborers from entering the US for work
  • 1921: Dr Marie Stopes opens Britain’s first birth control clinic, in London
  • 1921: Sailors revolted against the Soviet Bolshevik Regime in Kronstadt and thousands of people were killed
  • 1924: Sweden and the USSR exchanged diplomats
  • 1927: The US government refused to sign the League of Nations disarmament treaty
  • 1942: Bełżec Concentration Camp opened with the first transport Polish Jews from the Lublin Ghetto. Over the course of the war, about 30,000 Jews from this area were killed
  • 1944: Italy’s Mount Vesuvius erupted after months of volcanic unrest, destroying several towns near the volcano
  • 1959: Australia and the USSR restored diplomatic relations
  • 1963: Eruptions of Mount Agung on Bali killed 1,900 Balinese people
  • 1992: In a South African referendum of white voters on ending apartheid, over two-thirds voted to end to the system
  • 2019: Zimbabwe declared a state of emergency after Cyclone Idai tore through eastern Zimbabwe killing at least 259 people
  • 2019: Flash flooding and landslides killed at least 73 people and injured about 60 in Sentani and Jayapura, Papua, Indonesia
