On This Day

  • 1688: Quakers conducted the first formal protest of slavery in the Americas in Germantown, Pennsylvania
  • 1787: Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II banned child labor for children under 8 years old
  • 1828: More than 100 vessels were destroyed in a storm off Gibraltar
  • 1856: The American Party, known as the Know-Nothings, convened in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to nominate its first Presidential candidate, former President Millard Fillmore
  • 1884: Police seized all copies of Tolstoy’s “What I Believe In” because of his secular views of Christianity therein
  • 1903: The Dutch government of Abraham Kuyper launcheed new anti-strike laws
  • 1908: The American Ambassador to Japan was given a note by the Japanese in which the Japanese agreed to restrict Japanese emigration to the US creating the ‘Gentlemen’s Agreement’ between the two nations
  • 1922: The US Capper-Volstead Act allowed farmers to buy and sell cooperatively without the risk of prosecution under antitrust laws
  • 1923: Workers in Belgium’s Borinage mine workers began a strike for higher wages
  • 1927: The US and Canada opened diplomatic relations
  • 1932: Japan declared Manchuria independent
  • 1962: France and Algerian Muslims negotiated a truce to end their 7 year war
  • 1965: 27 copper miners died in an avalanche at Granduc Mountain, British Columbia, Canada
  • 1965: Church deacon Jimmie Lee Jackson was beaten and shot during a peaceful march in Marion, Alabama. His death 8 days later inspired the Selma to Montgomery marches
  • 1965: Gambia became independent from the United Kingdom
  • 1972: The California Supreme Court struck down the death penalty
  • 1979: A rare snow fell in the Sahara Desert
  • 2013: 15 people were killed by flooding and landslides in Indonesia
  • 2014: Police clashed with protesters in Bangkok, Thailand who were continuing to protest for political change
  • 2020: Swarms of desert locusts affected east Africa reaching South Sudan threatening to cause a further food crisis
  • 2021: Nearly seven million people were required to boil their water in Texas as an unusually harsh winter storm in the state continued
