On This Day

• Organize Your Home Day
• 1514: Pope Leo X issued a papal bull against slavery
• 1601: Church authorities in Rome burned Hebrew books
• 1699: Massachusetts held a day of fasting for wrongly persecuting “witches”
• 1873: Prominent African American Pinckney Benton Stewart Pinchback was elected to the US Senate but was never seated due to state elections controversy
• 1878: The US Supreme Court ruled racial separation on trains was unconstitutional
• 1914: The Gandhi-Smuts Agreement was reached between Gen. J.C. Smuts and Mahatma Gandhi, regarding rights for Indians
• 1949: 142 people died in a Black and Indian race rebellion in Durban, South Africa
• 1952: Snowstorms in the Sierra Nevadas killed 26 people
• 1963: George Wallace was sworn in as Governor of Alabama, stating during his address: “segregation now; segregation tomorrow; segregation forever!”
• 1967: An earthquake in Sicily killed 231 people
• 1967: The New York Times reported the US Army was conducting secret germ warfare experiments
• 1985: 16 people were indicted by the US for granting sanctuary to Central American refugees
• 2015: 63 people were killed and 70,000 people were left homeless after floods devastated Mozambique and Malawi
