On This Day

• 1812: an earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale destroyed 90% of Caracas, Venezuela and killed an estimated 15,000–20,000 people
• 1913: Dayton, Ohio was almost destroyed when the Scioto, Miami, and Muskingum Rivers reached flood stage simultaneously
• 1953: Dr Jonas Salk announced that he had successfully tested a vaccine to prevent polio, clinical trials began the next year
• 1966: Large-scale anti-Vietnam War protests took place in the United States, including in New York, Washington, D.C. and Chicago
• 1979: Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat signed the Egypt-Israel Peace Treaty in Washington, D.C.
