- 1529: 30 Jews of Posing, Hungary were charged with blood ritual and burned at stake
- 1660: Denmark and Sweden signed The Treaty Of Copenhagen ending the Second Northern War
- 1679: The Habeaus Corpus Act which strengthened a person’s right to challenge unlawful arrest and imprisonment passed in England
- 1896: A tornado hit St Louis killing 255 people and leaving thousands homeless
- 1907: The Bubonic Plague broke out in San Francisco
- 1917: In a race riot in East St Louis, Illinois, 1 black person was killed
- 1921: After 84 years of British control, Afghanistan achieved sovereignty
- 1935: The US Supreme Court declared FDR’s National Recovery Act unconstitutional
- 1942: Hitler ordered 10,000 Czechs murdered
- 1967: Australians voted in favor of a constitutional referendum granting the Australian government the power to make laws to benefit Indigenous Australians and count them in the national census
- 1985: Great Britain agreed to return Hong Kong to China in 1997
- 1988: The US Senate ratified a treaty eliminating medium-range nuclear missiles
- 2006: An earthquake struck Java, Indonesia. The earthquake and resulting tsunami killed over 6,600 people and left over 200,000 people homeless
- 2014: International Monetary Fund (IMF) Director Christine Lagarde called for “tougher regulation and tighter supervision” of banking sector
