Many days there are far too many anniversaries, holidays, and observances to post about individually on social media, so in an effort to have more of them available, LLPHP is going to experiment with posting them daily. On This Day

  • 1700: Massachusetts Colony ordered priests to leave the colony
  • 1839: King of Hawaii Kamehameha III issued an Edict Of Toleration which gave Roman Catholics freedom to worship in the Hawaiian Islands
  • 1863: Travelers Insurance of Hartford, the first accident insurer, was chartered
  • 1882: A tornado killed 130 people in Iowa
  • 1932: Around a thousand World War I veterans, known as the Bonus Army, amassed at the United States Capitol as the US Senate considered a bill that would give them certain benefits they had been promised
  • 1944: Iceland dissolved its union with Denmark and declared itself a Republic
  • 1963: The US Supreme Court ruled against Bible reading and prayer in public schools
  • 1971: US President Richard Nixon began the “War On Drugs”
  • 1972: Five agents of US President Richard Nixon were arrested after trying to bug the Democratic National Committee offices in the Watergate Complex, Washington
  • 1976: Indonesia annexed Portuguese East-Timor
  • 1991: South Africa abolished the last of its apartheid laws
  • 2017: Forest fires in Pedrógão Grande, Portugal began. Over time, they killed 62 people and more than 1,600 firefighters fought 156 fires
