On This Day

  • National Fire Day
  • National Life Insurance Day
  • 1598: France and Spain sign the Peace of Vervins
  • 1668: The Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, the first Peace of Aachen was signed, ending the War of Devolution, a French-Spanish war in The Netherlands
  • 1927: U.S. Supreme Court’s “Buck v. Bell” decision permitted forced sterilizations of various “unfits” by states’ authorities where such surgeries were practiced for eugenic reasons
  • 1945: World War II’s Battle of Berlin ended as the Soviet army took Berlin and General Weidling surrendered
  • 1983: A 6.7 earthquake injured 487 in Coalinga, California
  • 2008: Cyclone Nargis made landfall in Myanmar killing over 130,000 people and leaving millions of people homeless
  • 2011: The 2011 E. coli outbreak struck Europe, mostly Germany, leaving more than 30 people dead and many others sick
