  • 1794: Russian Empress Catherine II (Catherine the Great) granted Jews permission to settle in Kiev
  • 1888: Frederick Douglass became the first African-American to be nominated for US Vice President
  • 1944: 4 tornadoes struck the US’ Appalachia region and killed 153 people
  • 1950: The Swiss Parliament refused voting rights for women
  • 1958: A US Federal judge ruled racial separation must end in Little Rock, Arkansas in 2½ years
  • 1961: The Antarctic Treaty came into effect. It ensures that Antarctica is used for peaceful purposes, for international cooperation in scientific research, and that it does not become the scene or object of international discord
  • 1983: The US Supreme Court ruled Congress could not veto presidential decisions
  • 1990: Moldavia declared independence
  • 2005: The US Supreme Court set forth its decision in Kelo vs City of New London generally allowing the taking of private property under eminent domain for economic development
  • 2016: A ceasefire agreement was signed between the Colombian government and Farc rebels which brought to an end more than 50 years of conflict
  • 2016: The United Kingdom voted in the “Brexit Referendum” to leave the European Union
  • 2016: Storms and widespread flooding in West Virginia left at least 24 people dead
  • 2017: A landslide in Xinmo village, Sichuan province, China killed 15 people and left more than 100 people missing
  • 2019: Prague experienced its biggest protests since the fall of communism. The protests were against Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis, with an estimated 250,000 people protesting in Letna Plain Park
