On This Day
- 1298: The Jews of Ifhauben, Austria were massacred during the Rindfleisch Persecutions
- 1314: Through the Battle of Bannockburn, Scotland regained independence from England
- 1322: Jews were expelled from France for the third time
- 1535: The Anabaptist Commune of Münster was captured and its leaders were tortured and killed
- 1572: 5 clergymen were hanged in Enkhuizen
- 1648: Cossacks slaughtered 2,000 Jews and 600 Polish Catholics in Ukraine
- 1846: The residency tax on the Jews of Hungary was abolished
- 1885: Samuel David Ferguson became the first US black bishop
- 1941: The entire male Jewish population of Gorzhdy, Lithuania was exterminated
- 1957: The US Supreme Court ruled that obscenity was not protected by the First Amendment in Roth v. United States
- 1982: In the US, the Equal Rights Amendment was defeated
- 1982: The US Supreme Court ruled the President can’t be sued for actions in office
- 1986: The US Senate approved a landmark tax reform package
- 2004: Capital punishment was declared unconstitutional in New York
