On This Day

  • Clean Air Day
  • 1777: France recognized the independence of the American colonies from Great Britain
  • 1819: The Congress of Angostura established Colombia’s independence from Spain
  • 1821: Kentucky abolished debtors’ prisons
  • 1862: General Ulysses S. Grant issued order #11, expelling Jews from Tennessee
  • 1912: Albania’s de facto independence from the Ottoman Empire was recognized at the London Conference of Ambassadors
  • 1914: Jews were expelled from Tel Aviv by Turkish authorities
  • 1919: The Austrian Parliament approved an 8-hour working day
  • 1925: The Soviet Union and Turkey signed a non-aggression pact
  • 1943: Transport 63 departed with French Jews bound for Nazi-Germany
  • 1944: The US Army announced the end of excluding Japanese-Americans from the West Coast and detainees in internment camps were released
  • 1951: Dutch Communist Party members were forbidden to be civil servants
  • 1971: A cease fire went into effect between India and Pakistan in Kashmir
  • 1978: The Workers’ Party of Jamaica was founded
  • 2020: Cyclone Yasa made landfall as a category 5 storm over Bula province, Fiji, killing two people
