- Insurance Awareness Day
- International Lightning Safety Day
- 1748: More than 200 people were killed in a Riot after public execution in Amsterdam
- 1924: A tornado struck Sandusky and Lorain, Ohio and killed 93 people
- 1941: German and Romanian soldiers killed 11,000 Jews in Kishinev
- 1956: Riots broke out in Poznan, Poland resulting in 38 deaths
- 1978: The US Supreme Court ordered University of California medical school to admit Allan Bakke a white man claiming reverse discrimination when his application was rejected
- 1992: 2 earthquakes rocked California including the third strongest in US history
- 2004: Sovereign power over Iraq was returned to the interim government of Iraq by the Coalition Provisional Authority, which ended the U.S.-led rule of that nation
- The US Supreme Court held that the Second Amendment was incorporated under the Fourteenth Amendment in McDonald vs Chicago
