• 1629: The second part of the Treaty of Susa was signed by England, France, and Scotland
• 1775: The first abolitionist society in the US organized in Philadelphia
• 1849: Hungary declared itself independent of Austria
• 1913: People in Belgium began a general strike for voting rights
• 1935: Called Black Sunday, a severe dust storm ravaged the US Midwest, leading to the region being nicknamed “the Dust Bowl”
• 1941: During the first massive German raid in Paris, 3,600 Jews were rounded up
• 1944: The first Jews being transported from Athens to Auschwitz arrived
• 1969: A tornado struck Dacca, Pakistan killing 540 people
• 1971: President Nixon ended the blockade against the People’s Republic of China
• 1971: The US Supreme Court upheld busing as a means of achieving racial desegregation
• 1973: Acting FBI director L Patrick Gray resigned after admitting he destroyed evidence in the Watergate scandal
• 1978: Thousands of Georgians demonstrated in the capital Tbilisi against Soviet attempts to change the constitutional status of the Georgian language
• 1980: The first Cubans of the Mariel boatlift sailed to Florida
• 1999: NATO mistakenly bombed a convoy of ethnic Albanian refugees killing 75 people according to Yugoslav officials
• 1999: A severe hailstorm struck Sydney, Australia causing A$1.7 billion in insured damages, the most costly natural disaster in Australian history to date
• 2005: The Oregon Supreme Court nullified marriage licenses issued to gay couples a year earlier by Multnomah County
• 2007: At least 200,000 demonstrators in Ankara, Turkey protested against the possible candidacy of incumbent Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan
• 2010: Icelandic Volcano Eyjafjallajökull began erupting
• 2019: 11 tornadoes hit states in the Southern US killing eight people in Mississippi, Texas, and Louisiana
