On This Day

  • National ADD Awareness Day
  • National Feel the Love Day

  • 1714: The Holy Roman Empire and France signed the Treaty of Baden, ending the War of the Spanish Succession and resulting in the French retaining Alsace and Landau and Austria controlling the east bank of the Rhine
  • 1822: Pedro I, son of King Joao VI, declared Brazil’s independence from Portugal
  • 1901: The Peace of Peking ended China’s Boxer Rebellion
  • 1902: In Australia, the whole nation observed a ‘day of humiliation’ and prayed for rain, as a terrible drought killed livestock and threatened crops. Rain began to fall on September 10th
  • 1942: Transport #29 departed for Nazi Germany with French Jews
  • 1943: 987 Dutch Jews were transported to Auschwitz Concentration Camp
  • 1944: The Netherlands was struck by a powerful hurricane
  • 1947: Battles occurred between Hindus and Muslims in New Delhi, India
  • 1965: Hurricane Betsy began its path of destruction resulting in 74 deaths in Florida, Mississippi, and Louisiana over the next few days
  • 1977: US President Jimmy Carter and Panama’s General Omar Torrijos signed the Panama Canal treaties guaranteeing Panama control of the Panama Canal after 1999
  • 1999: A 5.9 magnitude earthquake on a previously unknown fault rocked Athens killing 143 people, injuring more than 500 people, and leaving 50,000 people homeless
  • 2004: Hurricane Ivan, a Category 5 hurricane, hit Grenada, killing 39 people and damaging 90% of its buildings
  • 2005: Egypt held its first presidential elections
  • 2012: 64 people were killed and 715 people were injured after a series of earthquakes in Southwest China
  • 2017: A 8.2 earthquake occurred near Pijijiapan, Mexico killing at least 90 people
  • 2020: According to Cal Fire, wildfires had burned a record 2 million acres to date in California during the 2020 fire season, an area larger than the state of Delaware
