- International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression
- National Gun Violence Awareness Day
- 1825: An unseasonable hurricane hit NYC
- 1912: Massachusetts passed the first US minimum wage law
- 1919: The US Congress passed the Women’s Suffrage Bill, the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution
- 1941: The Nazis forbade the Jews access to beaches and swimming pools
- 1941: The Republic of Croatia ordered all Jews to wear a star with the letter Z
- 1966: Hurricane Alma killed 51 people in Honduras
- 1970: Tonga (formerly Friendly Islands) declared independence from the UK
- 1985: The US Supreme Court struck down Alabama’s “moment of silence” law which provided for time for voluntary meditation or prayer during the school day
- 1989: The Tiananmen Square Massacre occurred. Chinese troops cleared the square of student protesters. Unofficial figures placed the death toll near 1,000 people killed
- 1990: Dr Jack Kevorkian assisted an Oregon woman to commit suicide which began a national debate over the right to die
