- 1933: a major earthquake occurred in Long Beach, California
- 1971: the US Senate approved the 26th Amendment to the Constitution, lowering voting age to 18
- 1972: the first black US political convention opened in Gary, Indiana
- 2014: German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned Russia’s Vladimir Putin that making Crimea part of Russia was illegal and in violation of Ukraine’s constitution
