  • National (SAAM) Sexual Assault Awareness Month’s Day of Action
  • 1648: Spanish troops and feudal barons struck down a people’s uprising in Naples
  • 1764: The British Parliament passed the Sugar Tax on the American colonies
  • 1768: The first US Chamber of Commerce formed in New York City
  • 1815: Mount Tambora in the Dutch East Indies, had its first violent eruption after several centuries of dormancy
  • 1906: Mount Vesuvius erupted and devastated towns in the Naples province, killing more than 100 people
  • 1919: The Polish Army executed 35 young Jews
  • 1932: 10,000 rioters seized the Colonial Building in the Dominion of Newfoundland, leading to the end of self-government
  • 1933: US President Franklin Roosevelt signed Executive Order 6102 prohibiting gold ownership by US citizens
  • 1936: Tupelo, Mississippi was virtually annihilated by a tornado in which 216 people died
  • 1938: Anti-Jewish riots broke out in Dabrowa, Poland
  • 1939: Membership in the Hitler Youth became obligatory
  • 1944: 270 inhabitants of the Greek town of Kleisoura were executed by the Germans
  • 1969: Massive anti-Vietnam War demonstrations occurred in many cities across the US
  • 1971: Sicily’s Mount Etna erupted
  • 1989: Poland granted legal status to the trade union Solidarność (Solidarity)
  • 1991: The US began air drops to Kurdish refugees in Northern Iraq
  • 1992: Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori suspended the Peruvian Constitution and dissolved Congress
  • 1992: Several hundred-thousand abortion rights demonstrators marched in Washington, DC
  • 2012: Severe storms in Argentina killed 14 people
  • 2012: A 77 year old pensioner’s suicide outside the Greek Parliament prompted further protests in Athens
  • 2012: Anonymous hacked several Chinese bureaus in opposition to government censorship
  • 2016: Iceland’s Prime Minister Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson resigned after the Panama Papers leaks showed a conflict of interest
  • 2016: San Francisco became the first US city to mandate paid parental leave
  • 2016: PayPal announced it was cancelling a $3.6 million investment in North Carolina after the state passed anti-gay legislation
  • 2021: India recorded over 100,000 new daily COVID cases for the first time, more than half of which were in the state of Maharashtra, which began a new lockdown
  • 2021: Tropical Cyclone Seroja caused floods and landslides in southeast Indonesia and East Timor, killing at least 113 people
  • 2021: Italy scrapped its 1914 film censorship law that allowed banning films on moral and religious grounds
