  • Brain Injury Awareness Day
  • World Hearing Day
  • 1699: Jews were expelled from Lübeck, Germany
  • 1789: the US Congress met and declared the Constitution in effect
  • 1791: the first Jewish member of the US Congress, Israel Jacobs (PA), took office
  • 1899: Cyclone Mahina killed over 300 around Cooktown, Queensland
  • 1929: Charles Curtis (R-Kansas) became the first native American VP
  • 1954: James E. Wilkins became the first black sub-cabinet member in the US
  • 1968: Martin Luther King Jr. announced plans for the Poor People’s Campaign
  • 1977: an earthquake in Romania killed 1,541
  • 1998: In Oncale v. Sundowner Offshore Services the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that federal laws banning on-the-job sexual harassment also apply when both parties are the same sex
  • 2007: approximately 30,000 voters took advantage of electronic voting in Estonia in the world’s first nationwide vote where part of the vote casting allowed by remote electronic voting
  • 2009: the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur who became the first sitting head of state to be indicted
