- 1805: The Naples/Calabria region was struck by an earthquake causing the deaths of about 26,000 people
- 1826: Riots in Vilnius, Lithuania caused the death of many Jews
- 1847: The Liberian Declaration of Independence was signed making Liberia a sovereign nation, independent from the American Colonization Society
- 1918: Race riots in Philadelphia left 4 people dead
- 1953: Arizona Governor John Howard Pyle ordered an anti-polygamy law enforcement crackdown on residents of Short Creek, Arizona, which becomes known as the Short Creek Raid
- 1963: Over 1,000 people were killed, and Skopje, Yugoslavia was destroyed by earthquake
- 1965: Republic of Maldives gained independence from Britain
- 2005: Mumbai, India received 39.17 inches (99.5cm) of rain within 24 hours, bringing the city to a halt for over 2 days
- 2012: North Korea was hit by Tropical Storm Khanun, killing 88 people and leaving 60,000 people homeless
