  • 1492: Queen Isabella I of Castile and King Ferdinand II of Aragon issued the Alhambra Decree which expelled Jews from their kingdoms
  • 1745: Jews were expelled from Prague
  • 1822: The population of the Greek island of Chios was massacred by soldiers of the Ottoman Empire following a rebellion attempt
  • 1870: Thomas Mundy Peterson of Perth Amboy, New Jersey became the first African American to vote in the US after voting in a local election on the town’s charter
  • 1944: Hungary ordered all Jews to wear yellow stars
  • 1966: 25,000 anti war demonstrators marched in New York City
  • 1983: The Popayán Earthquake in Colombia killed 267 people and injured about 7,500
  • 1991: Albania offered its first multi-party election in 50 years
  • 1991: The Soviet Rep of Georgia endorsed independence; resulting in the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact
  • 2012: Floods in Fiji killed 2 people and forced thousands to be evacuated
  • 2013: 11 people were killed in flooding at Port Louis, Mauritius
  • 2013: 2 people died from bird flu (type H7N9) in China
  • 2017: Mudslides caused by heavy rains swept through Mocoa, Colombia killing more than 200
