- 1643: A powerful earthquake struck Santiago, Chile killing one third of the population
- 1888: Princess Isabel of Brazil signed “Lei Auréa” abolishing slavery
- 1989: Approx 2,000 students began a hunger strike in Tiananmen Square, China
- 1996: Severe thunderstorms and a tornado in Bangladesh killed 600 people
- 2012: Torrential rains in Hunan Province, China, destroyed 3,500 homes and displaced 28,000 people
