  • 1750: Beginning today and going through the 18th, a tax revolt occurred in Gorinchem, Netherlands
  • 1881: Frederick Douglass was appointed Recorder of Deeds for Washington, D.C.
  • 1932: The US Congress changed the name “Porto Rico” to “Puerto Rico”
  • 1946: US President Harry Truman seized control of the nation’s railroads to delay a strike
  • 1949: The British Government recognised the Republic of Ireland (previously known as the Irish Free State)
  • 1954: The US Supreme Court unanimously ruled on Brown v Topeka Board of Education reversing the infamous 1896 “separate but equal” Plessy v Ferguson decision
  • 1971: Washington State banned sex discrimination
  • 1976: An earthquake struck in Uzbekistan killing thousands of people
  • 1983: Israel and Lebanon signed a peace treaty
  • 1990: The World Health Organization removed homosexuality from its list of mental illnesses
  • 2018: An Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo spread to the city of Mbandaka
  • 2019: Taiwan’s parliament voted to legalize same-sex marriage, becoming the first Asian country to do so
