  • National Hemp Day
  • Torture Abolition Day
  • 1620: Prince Bethlen Gabor of Hungary signed a peace treaty with Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand II
  • 1783: An earthquake in Calabria, Italy killed approximately 50,000 people
  • 1787: Shays’ Rebellion of debt-ridden Massachusetts farmers failed
  • 1794: The French National Convention proclaimed the abolition of slavery
  • 1797: An earthquake in Quito, Ecuador killed about 41,000 people
  • 1855: Soldiers killed Jewish families in Coro, Venezuela
  • 1880: The Black Donnelly Massacre in Biddulph, Ontario was carried out by members of the Vigilance Committee who murdered the five members of the Irish immigrant Donnelly family
  • 1887: The US Interstate Commerce Act authorized federal regulation of railroads
  • 1933: German President Paul von Hindenburg limited freedom of the press
  • 1948: Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon) declared independence from the UK
  • 1968: Around 100 Indians and Pakistanis from Kenya arrived in Britain after fleeing discrimination
  • 1975: The magnitude 7.3 Haicheng earthquake struck Haicheng, Liaoning, China
  • 1976: A 7.5 earthquake killed 22,778 in Guatemala and Honduras
  • 1985: 20 countries signed a UN treaty outlawing torture, but the US was not among them
  • 1988: Despite union calls to end the strike, the rank-and-file seamen at major British ports refused to return to work
  • 1998: A 6.1 earthquake in northeast Afghanistan killed more than 5,000 people
  • 2012: Tens of thousands of people were stranded by flooding in the Australian states of New South Wales and Queensland
  • 2013: Paris, France annulled a 213 year old law banning women from wearing trousers
  • 2014: Same-sex marriage was legalized in Scotland
