On This Day

  • HIV Vaccine Awareness Day
  • 1096: Crusaders massacred the Jews in the city of Worms
  • 1631: The English colony Massachusetts Bay extended voting rights to all free men in the colony
  • 1652: Rhode Island enacted the first law declaring slavery illegal
  • 1765: Fire destroyed a large part of Montreal, Quebec
  • 1852: Massachusetts ruled all school-age children must attend school
  • 1869: Robert Tanner Freeman became the first African American to graduate from Harvard Dental School
  • 1918: A TNT explosion at a chemical factory in Oakdale, Pennsylvania, killed 200 people
  • 1944: The USSR expelled over 200,000 Tartars from Crimea under accusations of collaborating with the Germans
  • 1964: The US Supreme Court ruled it was unconstitutional to deprive naturalized citizens of citizenship if they return to their home country for more than 3 years
  • 1978: Italy legalized abortion
  • 1980: Mount St Helens erupts in the Pacific Northwest of the US. 57 people were killed.
  • 1992: The US Supreme Court ruled states could not force mentally ill criminal defendants to take anti-psychotic drugs
  • 2006: The post Loktantra Andolan government passed a landmark bill curtailing the power of the monarchy and making Nepal a secular country
