- 1806: In the Decree of Berlin, Emperor Napoleon I banned all trade with Britain
- 1906: China prohibited the opium trade
- 1918: Polish soldiers organized a pogrom against the Jews of Galicia, Poland
- 1922: Rebecca L Felton of Georgia became the first woman sworn in as a US Senator
- 1974: The US Congress passed the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) over President Ford’s veto
- 1981: 400,000 people demonstrated in Amsterdam against cruise missiles
- 1989: TV cameras were first permitted in the British House of Commons
- 2004: The Island of Dominica was hit by the most destructive earthquake in its history, but only one person was killed
- 2017: Mt Agung on the Indonesian island of Bali began erupting
- 2019: The World Health Organization (WHO) said measles has killed more than 5,000 people in Democratic Republic of Congo so far in 2019, in the world’s largest and fastest-moving epidemic
- 2019: The first of a series of national strikes began in Colombia against President Duque’s government and proposed pension cuts
