- Heat Awareness Day
- 1349: 60 Jews were murdered in Breslau, Silesia
- 1830: US President Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act which led to the forced removal of the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, and Seminole tribes out of Georgia and surrounding states, and set the stage for the Cherokee Trail of Tears
- 1845: Fire raged through Quebec, Canada destroying 1,500 houses
- 1918: Azerbaijan gained independence and declared itself a Democratic Republic
- 1918: The Armenian National Council declared Armenia independent from the Russian Empire
- 1942: 1,800 Czechs were murdered by Nazis during an attack on Heydrich
- 1952: The women of Greece were given the right to vote
- 1956: US President Dwight Eisenhower signed a farm bill that allowed the government to store agricultural surplus
- 1961: Amnesty International was founded
- 1963: A cyclone hit India and Bangladesh killing about 22,000 people and leaving about 1 million houses destroyed
- 1965: A fire and explosion at Dhori mine in Dhanbad India killed 400 people
- 1977: Fire at the Beverly Hills Supper Club in Southgate, Kentucky killed 168
- 1995: An earthquake hit the Russian town of Khabarovsk, killing 2,000 people
- 1997: A tornado in Jarrell, Texas killed at least 28 people
- 2017: Floods and landslides in Sri Lanka killed at least 151 people
