- 1634: The colony of Massachusetts Bay annexed Maine colony
- 1759: The Province of Pennsylvania banned all theater productions
- 1775: Passage of The Mecklenburg Resolutions aka Mecklenburg Resolves which were supposedly the first local resolutions in the US. They annulled and vacated all British laws
- 1790: US copyright law was enacted
- 1889: Pennsylvania experienced the Johnstown Flood which killed 2,209 people
- 1910: The Union of South Africa declared its independence from the United Kingdom
- 1913: The 17th amendment to the US Constitution was ratified, providing for the direct election of Senators
- 1921: A large-scale race riot broke out in Tulsa, Oklahoma which was later described as the worst incident of racial violence in American history. Around 150-200 African Americans were killed
- 1931: A 7.1 magnitude earthquake destroyed Quetta, Pakistan killing 40,000 people
- 1935: A 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit Quetta, Pakistan killing an estimated 50,000 people
- 1955: The US Supreme Court ordered school integration “with all deliberate speed”
- 1970: The Ancash earthquake off the coast of Peru killed 66-70,000 and sets off the world’s deadliest avalanche
- 1985: A tornado outbreak in the United States and Canada saw 41 tornadoes hit Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and Ontario, leaving 90 people dead
