On This Day

  • National Creativity Day

  • World MS Day
  • 1626: An explosion at the Wanggongchang Gunpowder Factory in Beijing destroyed part of the city and killed 20,000 people
  • 1635: The Peace of Prague was signed between the Hapsburg Emperor Ferdinand II and the Electorate of Saxony which effectively ended the civil war aspect of the Thirty Years’ War
  • 1848: The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo between US and Mexico came into force, giving New Mexico, California and parts of Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and Colorado to the US in return for $15 million
  • 1879: An F4 tornado struck Irving, Kansas killing 18 people and injuring 60 others
  • 1908: The first federal workman’s compensation law in the US was approved
  • 1913: The Treaty of London was signed by the Great Powers, the Ottoman Empire and the victorious Balkan League (Serbia, Greece, Kingdom of Bulgaria, and Montenegro) bringing an end to the First Balkan War
  • 1937: In The Memorial Day Massacre the Chicago Police Department shot and killed 10 unarmed demonstrators during the “Little Steel Strike” in the United States
  • 1941: The first anti-semitic measures in Serbia were implemented
  • 1955: Said el-Mufti formed the government of Jordan
  • 1955: Tunisia began self governance
  • 1998: A magnitude 6.6 earthquake hit northern Afghanistan, killing about 5,000 people
