On This Day

  • 301: San Marino, one of the smallest nations in the world and the world’s oldest republic still in existence, was founded by Saint Marinus
  • 1189: Richard the Lionheart was crowned. 30 Jews were massacred after the coronation and Richard ordered the perpetrators be executed
  • 1697: King William’s War in America ended with the Treaty of Ryswick
  • 1725: Britain, France, Hannover, and Prussia signed the Covenant of Hannover
  • 1752: The British Empire adopted the Gregorian Calendar, losing 11 days. People rioted thinking the government had stolen 11 days of their lives
  • 1783: The Treaty of Paris was signed ending the American Revolutionary War
  • 1791: The new French Constitution, declaring France a constitutional monarchy, was passed by the National Assembly as part of the French Revolution
  • 1852: Anti-Jewish riots broke out in Stockholm, Sweden
  • 1865: An Army commander in South Carolina ordered the Freedmen’s Bureau to stop seizing land
  • 1891: Cotton pickers organized a union and staged a strike in Texas
  • 1900: With a proclamation by General Lord Roberts, Britain annexed the Boer Republic of South Africa
  • 1916: US President Woodrow Wilson signed the Adamson Act, providing an 8-hour day on interstate railroads, preventing a national railroad strike
  • 1921: KPB, the Communist Party of Belgium formed
  • 1930: A hurricane hit the Dominican Republic, killing 2,000 people and injuring 4,000 more
  • 1934: Tunisia began its move for independence
  • 1940: Sicherheits police banned Free Masons, Rotary, and the Red Cross
  • 1949: A fire in Chiang-king, China destroyed 7,000 lives
  • 1956: Tanks were deployed against racist demonstrators in Clinton, Tennessee
  • 1964: In the second incident of race riots in Singapore between Chinese and Malay this year, 13 people were killed and 106 were injured
  • 1971: Qatar regained complete independence from Britain
  • 1979: Hurricane David killed over 2,000 people in the Dominican Republic
  • 2004: The Beslan school massacre ended in the deaths of approximately 344 people, mostly teachers and children
  • 2012: Typhoon Bolaven killed 48 people in North Korea
  • 2018: England and the United Kingdom experienced their hottest summer ever
  • 2019: Hurricane Dorian finally moved off Grand Bahama after stalling for more than a day bringing catastrophic devastation, killing at least 50 people with over 2,000 people missing
