On This Day

  • International Day of Charity
  • Jury Rights Day
  • 1666: The Great Fire of London ended; all told, it left 13,200 houses destroyed and 8 people dead
  • 1795: USA and Algiers signed a peace treaty
  • 1796: General Salicetti ordered equal rights for Jews in Bologna, Italy
  • 1798: A new conscription law went into effect in France
  • 1863: The Mobile Bread Revolt broke out in Mobile, Alabama in protest of rising food prices and food shortages
  • 1915: An Anti-war conference was held in Zimmerwald, Switzerland
  • 1946: Amon Göth, former head of Kraków-Płaszów Concentration Camp, was found guilty of imprisonment, torture, and extermination of individuals and groups of people, in the first conviction of homicide at a war crimes court
  • 1967: Hurricane Beuleah formed. Over the next few weeks it would kill 54 people in the Caribbean, Mexico, and Texas
  • 2014: The World Health Organization estimated 1,900 people have died from the Ebola virus out of 3,500 infected in Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal, and Sierra Leone
  • 2015: US health officials confirmed a salmonella outbreak linked to cucumbers from Mexico was responsible for 1 death and for making hundreds of people sick
  • 2017: Hurricane Irma became the most powerful hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic Basin region with winds of 185mph (280km/h)
  • 2019: South African women marched on parliament to protest violence against women after a month when 30 were killed by their spouses
  • 2020: More than 50 people were arrested as Portland, Oregon, marked 100 days of protests and rioting against racism and police brutality
