  • 1776: A hurricane hit Guadeloupe, Mexico killing more than 6,000 people
  • 1839: New York City experienced a Great fire
  • 1848: The National Black Convention met in Cleveland, Ohio
  • 1866: Frederick Douglass became the first US black delegate to a national convention
  • 1876: A race riot broke out in Charleston, South Carolina
  • 1941: All Jews over age 6 in German territories were ordered to wear a star
  • 1941: The Jews of Vilna, Poland were confined to their ghetto
  • 1966: A race riot occurred in Atlanta, Georgia
  • 1968: Swaziland gained independence from Great Britain
  • 1975: A 6.8 earthquake along the Anatolian Fault killed over 2,000 people in Lice, Turkey
  • 1986: An attack on a synagogue in Istanbul, Turkey killed 23 people
  • 1991: The USSR recognized the independence of the 3 Baltic republics: Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania
  • 2017: Hurricane Irma made landfall on the Caribbean islands of Barbuda, Saint Martens, and British Virgin Islands causing heavy damage
  • 2017: Catalonia’s parliament passed a law to allow a referendum on independence from Spain
  • 2018: India’s Supreme Court legalized gay sex, overturning a colonial law
  • 2020: 100,000 people demonstrated in Minsk against Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, amid month-long protests against his re-election
