Many days there are far too many anniversaries, holidays, and observances to post about individually on social media, so in an effort to have more of them available, LLPHP is going to experiment with posting them daily here. On This Day

• Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day
• Orthodox Easter
• World Meningitis Day
• 1288: The Jews of Troyes, France were accused of ritual murder
• 1865: Fire alarm and police telegraph systems were put into operation in San Francisco
• 1867: Black demonstrators staged ride-ins on Richmond, Virginia streetcars
• 1872: The famous volcano Mt Vesuvius erupted in Italy
• 1915: Leaders of the Armenian community in Constantinople (now Istanbul) were arrested by Ottoman authorities, and many were later killed, marking the beginning of the Armenian Genocide
• 1916: The Easter Rising of Irish republicans against the British occupation began in Dublin
• 1921: The first municipal elections for men and women in Belgium were held
• 1921: Under supervision by the Allies, a plebiscite held in the Tyrol favored merging with Germany however, the Allies were unhappy with the outcome and gave the area to Italy
• 1923: A general harbor strike began in New York City
• 1950: The independent republic of South Molukkas was declared
• 1954: Australia and the USSR broke off diplomatic relations
• 1955: The Conference of Bandung held to promote Afro-Asian economic and cultural cooperation, and to oppose colonialism ended in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia
• 1960: A significant earthquake struck Iran’s Fars Province, killing 400-500 people
• 1961: US President John F Kennedy accepted “sole responsibility” following Bay of Pigs fiasco
• 1968: Student protestors took over Columbia University in New York City
• 1981: The US ended a grain embargo against the USSR
• 1989: Tens of thousands of student were on strike in Beijing, China
• 1990: West and East Germany agreed to merge their currency and economies on July 1st
• 1990: Gruinard Island, Scotland, was officially declared free of the anthrax disease after 48 years of quarantine
• 2006: King Gyanendra of Nepal gave in to the demands of protesters and restored the parliament he had dissolved in 2002
• 2013: 33 people were killed and 115 people were injured after a 5.7 earthquake struck Jalalabad, Afghanistan
• 2018: Golden State Killer suspect Joseph DeAngelo was arrested and charged with eight murders after being identified through genealogy websites and associated DNA submissions and testing
