• 1600: Philosopher Giordano Bruno was burned alive at Campo de’ Fiori in Rome after being charged with heresy by the Roman Inquisition for denying and disagreeing with Catholic doctrine
• 1854: Great Britain recognized the independence of South Africa’s Orange Free State
• 1902: Military reprisals against a general strike in Barcelona and nearby towns led to the deaths of 40 people
• 1913: Oregon enacted the first minimum wage law in the US
• 1926: An avalanche buried 75 people in Sap Gulch, Bingham, Utah causing the deaths of 40 people
• 1943: Dutch churches protested at Seyss-Inquart against the persecution the of Jews
• 1962: A major storm in Hamburg killed 265 people
• 1964: The US Supreme Court ruled in Westberry v Sanders that Federal House Districts should be roughly the same population
• 2006: A massive mudslide in Southern Leyte, Philippines killed 1126 people, according to the official death toll
• 2008: Kosovo declared independence from Serbia
• 2019: Thousands of people continued protesting in the streets of Port-au-Prince, Haiti against government corruption and inflation
