On This Day

  • International Day for Street Children
  • 1229: Queen Blanche of Castile and Earl Raymond VII of Toulouse signed the Treaty of Paris, also known as the Treaty of Meaux ending the Albigensian Crusade, also known as the Cathar Crusade, arranging a marriage, empowering the Inquisition, and ceding land
  • 1545: French King Francois I ordered the killing of protestants of Vaudois
  • 1770: The British Parliament repealed the Townshend Revenue Acts, which had fueled opposition to British rule in colonial America
  • 1787: Philadelphia’s Free African Society formed
  • 1844: Texan envoys signed the Treaty of Annexation with the United States
  • 1869: North Carolina’s legislature passed an anti-Ku Klux Klan Law
  • 1893: In the Massacre of Hoornkrans, Curt von François, colonial Governor of German South West Africa, now Nambia, led an attack by 225 Schutztruppe soldiers on Nama leader Hendrik Witbooi’s headquarters at Hoornkrans, shelling of the village and causing a tremendous number of civilian casualties. Witbooi escaped and waged several months of guerrilla warfare against the German forces
  • 1919: The British Parliament passed a 48-hour work week with minimum wages
  • 1931: Spanish voters rejected the monarchy
  • 1934: The US Auto-Lite Strike began, culminating in a five-day melee between Ohio National Guard troops and 6,000 strikers and picketers.
  • 1935: Germany prohibited publishing “not-Arian” writers
  • 1938: New York State implemented the first US law requiring medical tests for marriage licenses
  • 1942: Japan killed about 400 Filipino officers in Bataan
  • 1945: Canadian troops liberated Nazi Camp Westerbork, a transit camp for people being sent to other concentration camps
  • 1946: Syria gained independence from France
  • 1963: Police in Birmingham, Alabama, used dogs and cattle prods on peaceful demonstrators
  • 1973: France recognized North Vietnam
  • 1983: Harold Washington was elected Chicago’s first black mayor
  • 1986: 20,000 mine workers protested in Hasselt to demand that Limburg’s mines be kept open
  • 1990: In their first meeting, the East German Parliament acknowledged responsibility for the Holocaust and asked for forgiveness
  • 1991: The US announced the closing of 31 major military bases
  • 1992: A rare earthquake shook Germany
  • 1998: A 5.6 earthquake in Slovenia, occurred near the town of Bovec
  • 2009: Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas made a courtesy phone call to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu restarting the Palestinian-Israeli dialogue
  • 2012: Bodleian, Oxford University and the Vatican libraries announced that over 1.5 million pages of ancient texts would be made available across the internet
  • 2020: A huge storm system produced more than 40 tornadoes in 6 states from Texas to South Carolina and killed 32 people
  • 2021: Great Britain loosened its COVID-19 restrictions, opening pubs and shops after 175 days, the world’s longest period of restrictions
  • 2021: The worst frost conditions in half a century was felt in France and was predicted to affect 80% of French vineyards according to industry officials
