Anniversaries, Holidays, & Observances for March 19, 2022
Many days there are far too many anniversaries, holidays, and observances to post about individually on social media, so in an effort to have more of them available, LLPHP is going to experiment with posting them daily here. On This Day
- National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence
- 1563: The Peace of Amboise officially ended the first war in the French Wars of Religion, and guaranteed religious rights for Huguenots
- 1682: An Assembly of the French clergy issued a declaration stating, among other things, that the power of the King is not subject to the authority of the Pope
- 1748: A Naturalization Act passed granting Jews the right to colonize North American colonies
- 1775: 4 people in Italy were buried by an avalanche for 37 days, but amazingly 3 survived
- 1808: Charles IV, king of Spain, abdicated and allowed his son, Ferdinand VII to take the throne after riots and a revolt
- 1907: A state record 7.4 inches (18.8cm) of precipitation fell at Lewer’s Ranch, Nevada
- 1911: The first International Women’s Day saw over 1 million men and women attend rallies in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland. Issues discussed at the rallies included women’s rights to vote and hold public office, the right to work, to vocational training, and an end to discrimination on the job
- 1920: The US Senate rejected the Treaty of Versailles for the second time refusing to ratify the League of Nations’ covenant in preference of maintaining an isolation policy
- 1931: Nevada legalized gambling
- 1942: US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt ordered men between 45 and 64 to register for non-military duty
- 1945: Hitler issued the “Nero Decree” to destroy all German factories
- 1946: French Guyana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, and Reunion became the overseas “departments” of France
- 1965: Indonesia nationalized all foreign oil companies
- 1968: Students at Washington DC’s Howard University seized the administration building for four days as protest related to civil rights in the US and the treatment of students at the University
- 1969: The “Chicago 8” were indicted in the aftermath of unrest at the Chicago Democratic convention
- 1979: The US House of Representatives began live TV broadcasts via C-SPAN
- 1997: The US Supreme Court heard arguments in a suit regarding internet indecency
- 2003: Airstrikes by an American and British-led coalition signaled the start of the invasion of Iraq, without United Nations support and in defiance of world opinion
- 2013: 16 people were killed by mudslides in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
- 2020: The State of California issued lock down and “stay at home” orders with 910 cases of COVID-19 in the state
- 2021: The Icelandic volcano Fagradalsfjall erupted for the first time in 800 years and after more than 50,000 earthquakes
