On This Day

  • Volunteer Recognition Day
  • 1505: Jews were expelled from Orange Burgandy by Philibert of Luxembourg
  • 1810: The City Council of Caracas declared the city independent from Spain
  • 1871: US President Ulysses S Grant signed the into law The Enforcement Act of 1871 in which Congress said the President has the authority to both suppress disorder or insurrection on his own initiative and to suspend the right of habeas corpus among other provisions
  • 1894: 136,000 mine workers in Ohio began a strike for pay increases
  • 1914: Dozens of mine workers striking for better working conditions and their family members were killed by a militia made up of soldiers and private guards in the Ludlow Massacre, the worst event of the Colorado Coalfield War. John D Rockefeller, Jr was implicated as having orchestrated the Massacre.
  • 1920: Tornadoes killed 219 people in Alabama and Mississippi
  • 1931: The British House of Commons passed a bill allowing movie theatres, sporting events, and other amusements to open on Sundays
  • 1942: German occupiers forbade the Dutch access to their beach
  • 1964: 86% of black students boycotted Cleveland schools
  • 1971: The US Supreme Court upheld use of busing to achieve racial desegregation
  • 1980: Cuban President Fidel Castro announced he was opening the Mariel Port for Cubans to leave, about 125,00 left in the next 5-6 months
  • 1980: Cubans began arriving in the US from the Mariel boatlift
  • 1980: The climax of the Berber Spring in Algeria saw hundreds of Berber political activists arrested
  • 1985: An ATF raid on The Covenant, The Sword, and the Arm of the Lord (CSA) compound in Arkansas on various charges including charges regarding illegal weapons resulted in the peaceful end to a 4 day siege and the dissolution of the CSA
  • 1994: The Serbian Army bombed a hospital in Goradze Bosnia, killing 47 people
  • 1998: The German terrorist group Red Army Faction announced its dissolution
  • 2013: 193 people were killed and 11,826 were injured after a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Lushan County, China
  • 2013: 5 snowboarders were killed by an avalanche in Loveland Pass, Colorado
  • 2020: US states, Georgia, Tennessee, and South Carolina became the first to announce an end to some COVID-19 restrictions
  • 2021: Former police officer Derek Chauvin was convicted of the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, in a case that prompted huge nationwide racial justice protests
  • 2021: A record number of new COVID-19 cases were reported (5.24 million) in one week around the world according to the World Health Organization (WHO), with a third of the new cases reported in India
