• National Be Heard Day
• 1573: Turkey and Venice signed a peace treaty
• 1801: Massachusetts enacted the first state voter registration law
• 1851: The poll tax levied on Russo-Polish Jews entering Galicia was abolished
• 1906: The Finnish Senate accepted universal suffrage, except for the poor
• 1925: The American Negro Congress was organized
• 1927: A magnitude 8 earthquake struck Tango, Japan
• 1965: Alabama state troopers and 600 black protesters clashed in Selma during “Bloody Sunday”. Many protesters, including future congressman John Lewis were beaten and hospitalized
• 1974: The first general strike in Ethiopia took place
• 1976: Morocco and Mauritania broke off diplomatic relations with Algeria
• 1989: Iran dropped diplomatic relations with Britain over Salman Rushdie’s book “Satanic Verses”
• 1994: The US Navy issued the first permanent order assigning women on a combat ship
• 1994: ANC chief Nelson Mandela rejected demands by white right-wingers for a separate homeland in South Africa
• 2005: Mass protests for women’s voting rights took place outside the National Assembly of Kuwait
• 2007: The British House of Commons voted to make the upper chamber, the House of Lords, 100% elected
• 2019: Thailand’s Constitutional Court dissolved the opposition party Thai Raksa Chart, after it nominated the King’s sister as a candidate for Prime Minister
