  • 1492: Queen Isabella I of Castile and King Ferdinand II of Aragon issued the Alhambra Decree expelling Jews from their kingdoms
  • 1644: Pope Urbanus VIII and Duke of Parma signed the Peace of Ferrara
  • 1651: Cuzco, Peru was shaken by a significant earthquake
  • 1745: Jews were expelled from Prague
  • 1808: The Kingdom of Westphalia ordered Jews to adopt family names
  • 1822: Following an attempted rebellion, Ottoman Empire soldiers massacred the population of the Greek island of Chios
  • 1870: Thomas Mundy Peterson of Perth Amboy, New Jersey became the first African American to vote in the US
  • 1916: The Dutch government ended all military engagements
  • 1944: Hungary ordered all Jews to wear yellow stars
  • 1945: The Nazi Sicherheitsdienst (security service) murdered 10 political prisoners in Zutphen
  • 1958: The USSR suspended nuclear weapons tests and urged the US and Great Britain to do the same
  • 1966: 25,000 anti-Vietnam War demonstrators marched in New York City
  • 1970: Following an Orange Order parade, riots erupted that lasted three days in Belfast and the British Army used CS gas for the first time in large quantities
  • 1976: A New Jersey Court ruled that long-term coma patient Karen Anne Quinlan could be disconnected from a respirator at her parents’ order and allowed to die
  • 1979: The last British soldier left the Maltese Islands
  • 1980: US President Jimmy Carter signed into law the Depository Institutions Deregulation and Monetary Control Act of 1980, deregulating the banking industry
  • 1983: The Popayán Earthquake in Colombia killed 267 people and injured some 7,500 more
  • 1990: Major riots occurred in London and other British towns in protest against the new Community Charge poll tax laws
  • 1991: Albania offers its first multi-party election in 50 years
  • 1991: The Soviet Republic of Georgia voted for independence from the USSR
  • 2012: Fiji floods killed 2 people and forced the evacuation of thousands
  • 2013: 11 people were killed in flooding at Port Louis, Mauritius
  • 2013: 2 people died from bird flu (type H7N9) in China
  • 2017: Mudslides caused by heavy rains swept through Mocoa, Colombia killing more than 200 people
  • 2021: US President Joe Biden overturned restrictions on transgender people serving in the armed forces
  • 2021: New York state legalized the recreational use of marijuana although sales of it would not be legal for another 18 months
