- World Adoption Day
- World Freedom Day
- 1526: Jews were expelled from Pressburg (Bratislava), Hungary
- 1681: The Hungarian parliament promised Protestants Freedom of Religion
- 1862: US General Ulysses S. Grant issued orders barring Jews from serving under him
- 1872: The Great Boston Fire of 1872 destroyed close to 1,000 buildings
- 1932: A hurricane and storm waves swept over Santa Cruz del Sur, Cuba killing 2,500 people
- 1932: Riots between conservative and socialist supporters in Switzerland killed 12 people and injured 60 more
- 1935: The Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) labor union formed
- 1938: The Kristallnacht pogrom against Jews in Germany and Austria began, the first large-scale physical act of anti-Jewish violence
- 1942: Transport number 44 departed for Nazi Germany with French Jews aboard
- 1946: US President Harry Truman ended wage and price freezes
- 1953: Cambodia (aka Kampuchea) gained independence from France
- 1989: The East German Politboro opened the Berlin Wall and allowed East Germans to leave to West Germany
- 1998: Capital punishment in the UK, already abolished for murder, was completely abolished for all remaining capital offenses
- 2018: Mudslides after heavy rain in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil killed 10 people
- 2020: Recorded COVID-19 cases in the US passed 10 million, with 1 million new cases recorded in 10 days, and the death toll passed 237,000
